Farm Safety with Glen Fuels

As the pace picks up on farms and roads around Ireland, Aidan Murphy from Glen Fuels Gorey brings you this safety message. 

The constant noise and hum from heavy-duty farm machinery is very apparent on roads and fields throughout Ireland during the busy tillage season.

Farmers and machines are now working at full capacity and as we are extremely safety conscious here at Glen Fuels, we hope that these few simple recommendations may make a difference to the health and safety of you or your family and staff going forward.

• Farmers are currently sowing crops and cleaning out sheds after a hectic winter season which means chemicals are in regular use. It is essential that all chemicals are stored in a locked cabinet or building and out of reach of children.
• No matter how tempting it is to give small children the experience spending time in the tractor with a parent, sibling, friend or employee, never take more passengers than there are available seats in a machine.
• Friends and neighbours help each other during this busy time, and it is important to remember that hired and volunteer helpers are at a higher risk of getting injured so always make sure that everyone is experienced and knows what they are doing.
• All hydraulic hoses and pipes must be maintained and fit for purpose.
• Never wear loose clothing around equipment or machinery.
• Always have fire extinguishers and fire blankets close to hand.
• Make sure the PTO shaft is securely guarded at all times.
• And finally, while we all enjoy working in the bright and longer days, make sure all outdoor workers protect themselves with adequate clothing, necessary PPE gear and sun factor creams to protect the skin against harmful rays which could cause problems down the road.
