In 2017 Unicef released its latest report card on child well-being, which shows that Ireland’s teenage suicide rate is the 4th highest in Europe. The most recent CSO figures tell us that in 2015, 451 men and women committed suicide nationwide.
Glen Fuels is fully supportive of the Wexford Marine Watch initiative and the "Out and About in Wexford" 2018 Calendar produced by Wexford Camera Club.
Saving Lives County-Wide:
Wexford Marine Watch is a registered charity and voluntary organisation providing Suicide Prevention Patrols along Wexford Quays, Estuary & Harbour.
Wexford Marine Watch marked the first time in Ireland all local emergency & voluntary services joined forces Wexford RNLI, Wexford Civil Defence, An Garda Siochana, the National Ambulance Service, Order of Malta Ambulance Corps, Wexford Fire Service, Irish Coast Guard and Wexford Local Authorities.
"The primary objective was to try and reduce the high level of death by suicide in the Wexford Harbour and Bridge area – one of the longest bridges in Ireland today. Previously, most of these troubled individuals were not intercepted in time and got swept away by the very strong tidal flows in the Harbour. This often resulted in drawn out lengthy voluntary searches, sometimes for weeks or even months – resulting in distress & heartbreak for the families, the relatives, the search teams and the wider community.
"This ‘inter-agency’ co-operation ensures a swift, co-ordinated response to someone in difficulty, ensuring deaths are kept to a minimum and these people get the help they need. In the first four full years since Wexford Marine Watch launched (2012-2016), no lives were lost in Wexford Harbour through suicide – proof and testament that this concept does not just ‘work’, but works effectively." Out and About in Wexford:
"The Wexford Camera Club needs just enough funds to run workshops, enter competitions and run exhibitions. The Club doesn't do a huge amount of fundraising and decided that the proceeds of the 2018 Calendar would be split between the Club and a charity. Wexford Marine Watch was delighted to be asked to be involved", says Wexford Camera Club which formed a committee and rallied the sponsors, concluding that "everyone involved is delighted with the results of a lot of hard work and the Calendar is already selling well in the shops."
